Burnout is so widespread in developed countries that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has added burnout to its list of globally recognised diseases. Whilst there have been a number of descriptions of burnout over the years, the WHO has defined it as a syndrome of “chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed” which “includes feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion, results in increased mental distance from one's job and reduced professional efficacy.” Sound like someone you know?
We know it exists and we wonder about it in our patients, but how do we address it with them. More importantly, how do we recognise it in our colleagues and ourselves, what do we do to prevent it, and what can we do to address it?
This presentation will speak to burnout; how you can recognise, respond to, and act to prevent or reduce it for both patient and clinicians
