Objective:

This retrospective project collected data from all severely injured patients that presented to TUH from July 2021- June 2022. TUH has been a contributor to the ANZTR since 2020 to provide benchmarking, evaluating processes and outcomes for the severely injured. This study provides the first comparative analysis of TUH to the rest of Australia/New Zealand (ANZ) to benchmark, elucidating differences and similarities, to describe trauma in the region.

Methods:

This audit identified 311 patients with traumatic injuries that met ANZTR criteria (Injury Severity Score ((ISS)≥13 or mortality with ISS<13). A similar panel of data collection was adopted as the ANZTR.  We examined demographics, cause of injury, pre-hospital cares/transfer, inpatient care and overall outcomes.

Results:

Preliminary review of TUH trauma data indicates some key differences between TUH and the ANZ data. 16.4% cases were identified as first nations people, 48.6% (vs 29.3 bi-national) were transferred from other hospitals, only 43.4% (vs 70.7% bi-national) direct from scene, 37.6% (vs 32.3% Australia, 27% New Zealand) required an ICU admission and 7.4% of seriously injured were from assault.  Only 54.7% (vs 64% bi-national) of all cases were discharged directly home.

Conclusion:

This comparative analysis studies the variations in presentation, demographics, pre and in hospital cares for the severely injured trauma patients of TUH compared to the ANZTR data, highlighting the uniqueness of this region. This data will aid healthcare providers to establish an annual audit, identify trends and improve quality of care at TUH and across the vast geographical North Queensland catchment.
