At Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital (RBWH), we have designed, developed, and implemented a bespoke trauma database system – TraumaApp.

Why TraumaApp is unique:

Our database is more than just a data collection tool for research and reporting. The focus of our data collection is to support the trauma service’s clinical activities so that the clinicians can focusing on providing better patient care by reducing patients’ morbidity and mortality. It is a clinically driven and purpose-built out of necessity due to lack of agility, real time data and often disconnected information offered by other existing systems at the time.

The highlight of our data system:

  • Data linkage with key hospital information systems e.g., EDIS, HBCIS, ORMIS.
  • Timely and quality data.
  • “All In One” patient mini chart supporting clinician’s handover and ward rounding.
  • Implementing critical data points and standardising coding practice.
  • AIS coding and auto ISS scoring function.
  • Analytics and activity dashboards.
  • Data provision for trauma auditing and research.
  • Contribution to the national trauma data repository.

At RBWH, we now have a database with linkage to multiple hospital information systems including emergency department and the operating theatre system. With this linkage, it allows us to produce real time Power BI Dashboards of trauma presentations, admissions, and interventions within the hospital. From this good foundation,  our future aim is to expend further by linking more hospital systems and to share our success with other sites throughout Queensland.
